Ugh: Worst Ride Ever

So I was supposed to ride to Hayward, WI yesterday to meet up with Bethany and the kid at her family's house. I had been planning this ride since March, and I'd had this weekend picked out for three months (that's the way it works at my company: if you want a saturday off in the summer, you have to call in 90 days ahead of time and hope your seniority is enough). All day friday, the weather forecast for the day of the ride was for 68° F all day and a sprinkle at about 3pm. When I went to bed friday evening, the forecast was for 68° and now sprinkling all afternoon. I figured that would be fine, after five hours in the saddle it might be nice to have some light rain for the last half. Anyway, there was supposed to be a 20 mph tailwind. So I went to bed and set the alarm for 6:30 am so I could have a nice breakfast, some coffee, and stretch, and be out of the door at 7:30. At 8:30 I woke up with the alarm clock upside down on the floor.

It was only about 52° yesterday morning, and the forecast suddenly predicted that it wouldn't top 55°. It had also already started to sprinkle. 8 miles in, my water bottle flew 20 miles in, I'd been in a downpour for 45 minutes already, that tailwind ended up being a 20 mph headwind, and i was making terrible time. I was shivering from being cold and wet and my shoes were buckets of water. I gave up. Ugh.

The ironic thing is that I absolutely love rainy days. I wish it rained every day of the year except for every 18th of August. At least I've been able to enjoy the weather for the first time in a while. Maybe I won't be so cranky all the time.

I don't have the time off to attempt another one this season. Next summer, we'll see. I have 19 days of vacation time, including my birthday, and I can add a couple more if I skip my holiday pay. Most of that will be used on paternity leave for Squirt #2, and most of the rest will be set aside for Jessica's wedding in San Francisco. Maybe I can save a day.

I spent yesterday drinking beer and working on the flooring and trim upstairs. I saw Cameron Maybin's first major league homerun and major league necktie courtesy of the Rocket. I looked for miter saws on craiglists (anybody got one for sale?). I rode the bus to a bar (Those low-floor hybrid buses are awesome. We need some at Nicollet). I slept in way past the time that the kid usually lets me. I got kinda bored. Fantasy football draft? Twins game? Not bad.
