People with dogs and without kids, think that a dog is just like a kid! So they want you to smile back and act like raising a dog is as challenging as raising a child and that the dog is so cute and some reflection of the 'parent'.

if you move to SF, you'll have to love dogs or everyone will hate you. I think that's why everyone hates me here...
