List Week: Jeter Award Finalists for 2006

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Day two of List Week brings us ten finalists for the Derek Jeter Award, for albums that have been grossly overrated and unexplainably idolized by the media. As in, these records can't field their position (shortstop) and are no more valuable offensively than Mark Loretta or Jason Bartlett. Ahem.

The high rating used here is from Metacritic, a site that averages ratings given by multiple media sources. The low rating is obviously mine. Both ratings use a ten-point scale. I'm sorry to go all "math" on you, I'll try to not do it often.

  1. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, 8.3, 3.0
  2. Serena Maneesh - Serena Meneesh, 8.4, 4.0
  3. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury, 9.1, 4.8
  4. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, 8.4, 3.4
  5. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife, 8.5, 4.6
  6. Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye, 7.9, 4.0
  7. The Roots - Game Theory, 8.3, 4.8
  8. Bob Dylan - Modern Times, 8.9, 6.0
  9. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit, 7.8, 5.0
  10. Beck - The Information, 7.3, 4.8

[Edited 13 Dec 06 due to faulty math, Neko Case was really only about as overrated as The Decemberists.]

Hey, I really like that Neko Case album!

Snob.

Uh, we're confused by your scale. If Neko Case's album is so low, where would you put a trainwreck like K-Fed? If he's a 1, even 0, no way does Neko deserve to be only 2-3 points away from him.

I haven't heard Kevin Federline's album. I can't imagine it being much worse than anything related to the New Pornographers, except maybe a few Bejar things.

So, wait, does Neko Case get a bad rating because you didn't like her album, or because she's associated with the New Pornographers?

Huh? Why would I adjust my impression of an album based on the existence of Kevin Federline or the New Pornographers?
