Yesterday was Macy's Day of Music (or something to that effect) in downtown Chicago. I didn't really pay much attention to it. I was too busy being on campus and not working (so far my most unproductive day yet). However, some friends and I made it down to the Chicago Symphony Hall to see Tortoise perform a live soundtrack accompaniment to F.M. Murnau's 1922 silent-horror "Nosferatu". It's a movie I've seen several times before and it's a surprisingly scary film at times. There were more than a few chuckles running through the audience due to the extreme facial and physical acting at times (hey, you have to convey emotion somehow when you can't use dialogue), which killed the mood somewhat, but the music was wonderful. Tortoise did a great job of composing a soundtrack that fit the movie, was appropriate to the mood of the given scene, and yet still sounded distinctly like them. I think that takes a fair amount of courage and creativity to be able to contribute to a piece of art that was created 85 years ago and still maintain your identity. I'm hoping that a version of the movie will be released with their soundtrack on DVD soon. Incidentally, a couple friends and I went to a tiny dance club afterwards and, low-and-behold, there was Jeff Parker, the frontman for Tortoise, sitting by the entrance. What are the odds, eh?
Oh yeah, and the Rockies are unstoppable.

When I lived there (before the Dbacks' existence), spring training was treated about the way we treat the St. Paul Saints or going to the zoo here in MN for most people. It's something fun to take the kids to once a year. There'd be a couple hundred people at a well attended game. There are, however, a ton of retired players who live there. I don't think many of them are going to games still. Most people there will forget about anything Dbacks as soon as the Suns season starts.
The history of Spring Training in AZ is the reason there were more Cubs fans at Chase than DBacks during the NLDS.

Expansion? Don't forget, baseball spring training has been in AZ for a loooong time. Florida too. Many of those fans know baseball well. Every team has newbie-fans that don't know squat...they show up because it's the place to be!! (Like Comisky....yeah, right!)
