"...because eventually, no matter how good you are, someone will hate you and think of you as a bug. And the next thing you know: you're gone."

For reason's unbeknownst to myself, I've been listening to The Great White North LP by Bob & Doug MacKenzie (Rick Moranis & Dave Thomas). I come home from school and have more of a desire to listen to those two morons spouting nonsense for 45 minutes than to listen to music. It's pretty great because there are parts of the album that I consistently laugh out loud at, which is saying something considering that I when I get into an album or a movie or something, I watch or listen to it nonstop for about a week. Anyway, I've been listening to this album and trying to figure out how much of it was scripted and how much was ad-libbed. Obviously, they couldn't just sit down in front of a mic with a case of beers and just start talking. There is at least some semblance of order, but there are clearly improvised points as well. Example:

Doug: Hey, hosehead, you got any more stories?
Bob: Sure...uh...hey, remember the time we were at that provincial park?
Doug: Yep.
Bob: Oh, ok.
Doug (laughing): .....then there's no need to talk about it, I guess.

I'm trying to figure out if they get so into their characters that their characters just sorta take control of the actors and it REALLY IS all a casual, spontaneous conversation between Bob & Doug MacKenzie. Or do they have to keep a tight rein on their dialogue and actions? I don't know. It's an interesting question. I'm sure there's some happy medium in there that I could just conclude on. But that would be boring, eh?
