Yesterday, I witnessed one of the greatest baseball spectacles I've ever seen. Shaky Carlos Silva pitched six decent innings, Joe Mauer (Jo-Joe from Ko-Como as my mum calls him) secured his batting title, and the crowd at the Dome would erupt in the middle of a pitch when the KC/Detroit scores were posted. The topper was getting a split-screen view of the Twins in the dugout after their victory and the broadcast of the Detroit game. After the last Detroit out, we got to see the Twins freak out and run onto the field. That was so cool. They shared champagne with the fans and ran around the field high-fiving people. It was one of the greatest celebrations I've ever seen. My hope is that the Tigers don't get too down as I want them to beat the Yanks in four games. I've got to bring a radio to work tomorrow.
Speaking of work, it looks like I'll be taking control of an academic department. I never thought I'd be doing that EVER. Well, I'll be taking over in an administrative capacity. I've got some training modules to do over the next few weeks. But yeah our chief coordinator is leaving and it appears that I'm the interim. I can't say I was expecting that when I signed on.
Ah, more good news. My dad made me aware of an offer being made by the worst airline in the world whereby one might fly to foreign locations at a more-than-reasonable price. I looked into the matter further and found one particular deal that was too enticing to turn down. So, after a lengthy online transaction, I'm now the owner of a round-trip plane ticket to London. I'll be leaving the weekend after Thanksgiving (that's the:00 AMerican Thanksgiving) and will be gone for a week. I'm super stoked as I have been wanting to go back for the better part of three years. Talked to a mate today and we're thinking of walking and climbing along Hadrian's Wall. I wanted to get there last time, but didn't work out. Also looking forward to having a beer with my good friend Sarah in Marx' old pub.
Hmm, trying to think of other stuff, but nothing comes to mind. I will post photos soon. Promise.
Posted by ben on October 2, 2006 8:52 PMMy tickets are non-stop to Gatwick. I imagine they'd fly out of Boston too.
Posted by: Ben at October 4, 2006 12:43 PMNWA? Don't check your luggage, dude. And bring a snack.
Posted by: ryan at October 5, 2006 12:52 AMApparently we're getting dinner. One meal on an 8 hour flight. I'm definitely bringing a few sandwiches.
...but no liquids or gels...yeah, seriously, don't check your bag. but don't bring shampoo either... catch twenty-two...
Posted by: zakcq at October 5, 2006 9:25 PMA friend of mine and I are looking into going to London too, but at the end of Jan. I've been seeing prices around $400. Is that about what you paid?
you're allowed no more that 3 ounces and it has to be in a resealable plastic bag when you get up to the security check point. Same with toothpaste, deoderant ect.
Posted by: zakcq at October 6, 2006 7:56 AMThat's quite a bit less than I paid, but you also live on the East Coast. Lucky.
Posted by: Ben at October 6, 2006 4:12 PMYeah, I guess that is one of the advantages of living out here. I'm thinking a bit about not applying to Harvard for a phd program, because honestly, I don't know who I would work with. No one really is doing the stuff that I:00 AM interested in except maybe one guy, a little bit, but I think he is crazy. And he is old anyway. Sigh.
Posted by: Anna at October 6, 2006 4:54 PMit sucks how expensive flights are right now. when J & I went to Dublin 2 thanksgivings ago we flew for about 230 each. Actually, Summer before last I even saw some flights to Tokyo for only about $500.

London, huh? Rock on. Those end of year cheap tickets rock. That's how J & I got to Dublin a couple of thanksgivings ago.
Does NWA fly through Boston for the London flights? I know they do for:00 AMsterdam. If you do let me know. I work at the airport so I can join you for a drink if you do.
