Artists and Ice Cream

Author and Niece

My niece and I went to the Art Institute of Minneapolis yesterday and we had a great time. It was her first time at an art museum and I think she seemed to like it. We spent more time looking at three-dimensional stuff like furniture and some of the period rooms they have set up (such as the Tudor Room, the Georgian Room, and the Charleston Drawing Room). They also had an impressive collection of armour that she seemed to like (especially the swords with flowers and jewels on the hilts). She didn't seem to take too much interest in paintings or drawings. The most:00 AMusing comment of the day came while standing in front of a piece of early modernist art from Russia (one of my favorite styles). "It looks like a baby painted it." Guess we're not taking her to the Walker anytime soon.

So afterwards we ran around in the park for about 15 minutes and then went to Sebastian Joe's for some ice cream, which was a bit of an interesting ordeal since she insisted on having whatever flavour if ice cream I was having. Anyway, we both settled on Oreo and then I took her home. On the way home she talked my ear off about just about everything. How she wanted to go fishing, about some dance she and her brother had invented that had to do with their bums (she's gotten to the point where jokes about bums and bowel movements are funny), and she told me a bunch of...original...knock knock jokes. I guess the important thing is that SHE found them funny.

It was a very nice day and I'm glad we went, but man was I tired. And she was perfectly well-behaved the entire time. Lord knows how I'm gonna feel when I have my own kids and they're having a bad day. I just get tired thinking about it.
